If you’re a WSET student, you’re probably always planning the next step on your wine journey, constantly on the lookout for new learning opportunities. Whether you’re looking to deepen your understanding of a specific wine region or a sector of the wine industry, there can be an overwhelming amount of classes, courses, and certifications available. For those keenly interested in Spanish wines, there’s no better place to study than in Spain, where you can really immerse yourself in the vibrant Spanish culture and history while also learning about our wine.
The Wine Scholar Guild, based in Washington D.C., has developed a comprehensive series of certification courses focused on Spanish, French and Italian wines, and we at Salut Wine Studio (partner of Wine Courses Barcelona) are proud to be able to offer the Spanish Wine Scholar (SWS) course in Barcelona. We offer our 3-day certification course in Spanish wine for those who are looking for a deep immersion in Spanish wine, without the commitment of a multi-semester program. For those interested in mastering Spanish wine in English, the Spanish Wine Scholar course is your answer. SWS is your passport to understanding Spanish wine. The coursebook and instructor Nika Shevela (Wine Alphabet) will guide you on a wine-focused journey through Spain, teaching you about legendary wines, foods, landmarks and cultural attractions as you “travel” via the wines in your glass. The program has been divided into several sections, each featuring a geographical area of Spain. Within each section, a tantalizing palette of wines are showcased.
While you’re here in Barcelona, you can take advantage of everything the city has to offer, including the fine dining and our exploding wine scene. There’s the temptation of Albert Adrià’s reopening of Enigma, our beloved Disfrutar, and all the delicious bites being served up alongside trendy natural wines at places like Gresca, Monocrom, Extra Bar, Salvatge, or Bar Brutal, to name a few.
Wander through the quaint warren of streets in the Born and stop to grab a drink at the quaint La Vinya del Señor across from the Santa Maria del Mar cathedral or wander up into boho Gràcia for a wine at the cute Viblioteca. And of course, if you want to see the vines in person, Barcelona is located at the heart of a beautiful wine country. You can visit some of the country’s top wines in Priorat or explore the sparkling wines produced right in our backyard of the beautiful Penedès. You’ll carry the memories of your experience here for years to come and leaving with a wine certification will be the icing on the cake.
Who is the course for?
The course is for wine professionals as well as serious wine enthusiasts. It’s helpful to have a basic background knowledge of wine, but not necessary for the course.
What will I taste during the course?
We taste 50 wines during the three day course. The wines come from all over Spain and represent a wide range of wine styles, grapes and sub-regions.
When are the next course dates?
Our next intensive course will be October 28-30, with the exam held on the afternoon of the 30th. Registration deadlines and details are found on the Salut Wine Studio website.
How does the exam work?
The exam is composed of 100 multiple-choice questions. Candidates need a score of 75% to receive the credential. Individuals who follow this in-depth Spanish wine course and pass the exam, earn the Spanish Wine Scholar™ title and SWS post-nominal which may be incorporated into a professional signature (e.g. John Smith, SWS).
