Online courses: how do they work?

Due to the current situation with regards Covid-19, Wine Courses Barcelona will now be offering online versions of the WSET Levels 1 and 2 in Wines. From the start date of the course, students will have one year of access to the online classroom and a set number of weeks of educator support from our head educator, Sharon Grundy. The online platform is designed and administered by the Wine and Spirits Education Trust, and will clearly guide you through modules, activities and feedback exercises. You will also have one year in which to complete your exam. The exam will be taken in person at our central Barcelona location. Level 1 Award in Wines

Who is it for?
A beginners’ course intended for people who have little or no prior knowledge of wines. It is designed to provide a sound but simple introduction to wines.
What is covered during the course?
The WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting, characteristics of principal grape varieties, the grape-growing and winemaking processes, storage and service, health, safety and legal issues, and food and wine pairing.
What is the assessment criteria?
Students must pass a 30 question closed-book multiple choice exam to gain the qualification.

Upcoming WSET Level 1 Courses

Date: 3rd June 2020

Study time: 6 hours are recommended in order to complete the activities and read the materials, plus an additional hour of revision prior to your exam.

Cost: €105+IVA (@ 21%)

Included in the course fee: Online classroom access for one year, 4 weeks of educator support, examination fee and certificate.

Level 2 Award in Wines

Who is it for?
Intended for people who have little or no prior knowledge. It is suitable wherever a good level of wine knowledge is required to underpin job skills and competencies, but is also useful for those who have a general interest in wine and wish to broaden their knowledge.
What is covered during the course?
The WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting, characteristics and styles made from principal and regionally important grape varieties, an in-depth examination of the grape-growing and winemaking processes, production of sweet, sparkling and fortified wines, label terminology, and food and wine pairing.
What is the assessment criteria?
Students must pass a 50 question closed-book multiple choice exam to gain the qualification.

Upcoming WSET Level 2 Courses

Date: 15th April 2020

Study time: 6 hours per week are recommended in order to complete the module, activities, read the the textbook and revise for your exam.

Cost: €325+IVA (@ 21%)

Included in the course fee: Online classroom access for one year, 5 weeks of educator support, textbook, workbook, examination fee and certificate.

FAQs

No. Once you have passed the exam, you will hold the WSET certificate for that level. There will be no difference with having attended a presencial course.
For the Level 1 course, no physical study pack will be issued. All information will be contained in the online classroom. For Level 2 study packs, courier costs to any Spanish mainland address are included in the price above. For delivery outside of mainland Spain, please contact us for a quote.

Both Levels 1 and 2 include tasting modules, along with a list of recommended samples. You will be provided feedback on your tasting notes by your course educator. Samples can be purchased independently or as sample packs from Vinovae. There will also be the option to attend a tasting tutorial prior to your exams. This tutorial will be charged as an add-on and can be confirmed when you book your exam date.

Yes. Please contact sharon@winecoursesbcn.com to make the appropriate arrangements. The difference in fees will be refunded in full.

There will be a minimum of 4 available exam dates for each level, which will take place throughout the coming year. You will be notified of these dates in due course and asked to confirm your attendance. Exams will take place at Hotel Aranea. All students must attend an exam in person, in order to pass the qualification. There will also be options to take the exam at home through remote invigilation. Contact your educator for details.
